TVB series "The Mysteries of Love" has once again been accused of plagiarizing 2 Japanese drama series, one of them being Kimura Takuya’s Mr. Brain.
During public events, "The Mysteries of Love" star Raymond Lam has repeatedly been questioned by reporters on the plagiarism controversy. To be perfectly honest, Raymond is only an actor in the series – creation of the script really has nothing to do with him. So when reporters continue to pursue him about the issue, the intention is nothing more than wanting to get his ‘reaction’ to the situation so they can ‘make news’ from it.
That’s not to say that TV artists are not allowed to voice their opinions about the content of a series they are currently filming. In fact, there have been numerous reports about certain artists expressing their opinions about particular scripts and some have even gone as far as modifying the scripts themselves.
Usually the way it works is that before a series starts filming, the producer will call a meeting with the entire cast and explain to them the main storyline as well as the characters that they will be portraying. If an artist has an objection to the content, or has suggestions on character or storyline, they are given the opportunity to voice their opinion during the meeting – however, most of the time, to avoid embarrassment to the production team and the writers, the artists will usually meet with the producer privately to discuss.
Aa business, a television station has its specific systems and processes that are used to run its operations, so it does not advocate artists having too many opinions or suggestions on such things as scripts, production, etc. If every artist were to voice their opinion and request to change the script, then the production team would be placed in a difficult position, since most artists will be concerned only about their own roles and want the script changed to fit their own needs – which, inevitably, could cause other artists to be unhappy. Indeed, it is difficult to please everyone.
As far as the situation of a script being modified even after filming has started, it is actually not a rare occurrence – however most of the time, it is because an experienced artist (generally a veteran with tenure and a wealth of experience) objects to certain dialogue in the script that doesn’t make sense.
In recent years, there has been a severe shortage of creative talent in the HK television industry, so the responsibility of writing scripts generally falls on the shoulders of a group of young ‘newcomers’ who may have just ‘entered’ society and have no real life experiences – and therefore, have limited understanding of the intricacies of life and human nature. Though most of these new writers are ‘led’ by senior, experienced scriptwriters, if they encounter a particularly complicated script that is difficult to modify, they lack the ability to handle the situation, let alone having to rewrite the script completely. Therefore, they will usually ‘fix’ the major problems only and leave the ‘smaller’ issues alone – which is why oftentimes audiences would find ‘discrepancies’ in some series.
Currently, there is a trend of middle-aged artists returning to film TV series. Not only do most of these artists have a wealth of acting experience and skill, they also have abundant life experiences as well. Therefore, if they encounter a ‘problem script’, there is a high likelihood that they will voice their opinions about it – if the suggestions are within reason, the writers and producers will most likely listen and make changes to the script.
Of course, requests to modify scripts doesn’t only happen among experienced artists. There have also been instances of younger generation artists who -- riding on their tremendous popularity – will also try to ‘follow’ the veterans and do the same thing.
Artists who request changes to scripts are usually concerned about the parts related to ‘the ways of the world’ and other details of everyday life. With a series like "The Mysteries of Love" that is hugely reliant on scientific knowledge and reasoning, even a small change to the script could affect the entire series – so is it possible (or even likely) that the artists in the series would be able to voice their opinions and suggestions for changes?
