First pictures of the Motorola Droid 2 World Edition for Verizon surface

We’ve heard of Verizon’s plans to launch a World Edition Motorola Droid 2 before. There were even rumors that the vanilla Droid 2 might get discontinued once that hits the shelves.

A “World Edition” or “Global Roaming” phone is basically a dual-capability device that can work both on Verizon’s CDMA network in the States and on GSM networks elsewhere, making roaming very easy for Verizon customers.

The Droid 2 World Edition doesn’t seem to differ from its CDMA-only brother at all, aside from a new paint job and those dual radios inside.

At least that’s what today’s leaked photos of this upcoming device show:

Given the close resemblance to the original Droid 2, those rumors may just have it right – there would be no reason for the vanilla version to stick around once this puppy gets officially launched. Unless Verizon plan to charge a premium for the global roaming feature and price the Droid 2 World Edition at, say, $249 with a 2-year contract. That seems entirely plausible too at this point, but only when this thing is finally unveiled will we know for sure.

And that’s clearly going to happen sooner, rather than later.
