Lady Gaga starves herself to fit into her costumes, new book claims
A new book is claiming that Lady Gaga was hospitalised six times in 2009 due to her yo-yo dieting which caused her to get dangerously ill.
The singer's former tour manager David Ciemny says the controversial star goes to dangerous lengths to fit into her infamous costumes.
In his new book Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga, Ciemny says the performer found it hard coping with her new found celebrity.
'When I say she was sick, I mean physically and mentally.'
David writes in his book that Gaga would go on junk food binges while on tour and would gorge on sweets and unhealthy food.
He claimed she'd then not eat for weeks so she could slim to fit into her costumes. He recalls she once lost 20 pounds in between fittings.
Talent scout Wendy Starland added, 'The pressure on her to lose weight was very high.'
The issue had allegedly been the subject of concern when she shot her music video for Paparazzi.
A witness from the shoot said: 'Producers had to shoot around her. They draped fabric over her thighs and shot her backside with a softer lens.'
David's wife Angela also weighs in on what she described as bizarre behaviour by Gaga. She claims that the 24-year-old would cuddle up next to her in bed before her performances and then beg for her to come back when she left.
'I would say, 'Gaga, I have a husband to go home to. I'll be in the room next door.
'She'd call and text me, 'I miss you Ange, can you come back?'
Angela said she would return to Gaga's room and they soon ended up spending lots of time together.
'We literally would do our make-up together every morning and get ready for bed together at night.'
The Bad Romance singer has admitted in the past to being insecure.
'When I wake up in the morning I feel just like any other insecure girl. Then I say, B***h, you're Lady Gaga, you get up and walk the walk today.'
Gaga also revealed she was bullied about her appearance while at an all-girls private school in New York.
'I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight. I got made fun of.'
Although the hurtful comments hit her to the core, Gaga admits that throwing herself into her work and her musical talent helped her to cope.
However, Gaga's desire to succeed and to please her fans has sometimes taken its toll on the petite star.
In January she was forced to cancel four US shows suffering from an irregular heartbeat brought on by exhaustion.
She also tested 'borderline positive' for Lupus, a tissue disease which claimed the life of her aunt.
Following a severe case of jet lag after arriving in Australia, Gaga passed out three times while performing her first show in Auckland back in March.
'I was so jet lagged,' she told Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O.
'I passed out about three times on stage that night but I got myself to the floor. I'd rather die on stage than walk off because I was going to pass out.'
There has been speculation about Gaga's eating habits before.
A rep for the singer had dismissed reports earlier this year that Gaga was just eating baby food in order to stay slim.
Her fans are probably hoping that Lady Gaga's non conformist attitude and sense of individuality isn't lost in her quest to become skinny.
Poker Face: The Rise and Rise of Lady Gaga is out on September 14.
