Set alight! Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz film new scenes for Pirates of the Caribbean in the midst of a burning set

It may be entitled On Stranger Tides, but the cast of the new Pirates of The Caribbean film had more than the high seas to battle while shooting the new movie.

Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane found themselves in the midst of a fiery set as they filmed the fourth instalment of the hit franchise.

At one point, a small castle-like structure was spectacularly set alight on the California-based lot.

Meanwhile, the cast looked relaxed as they focussed on filming their scenes, with Depp at one point sharing a joke with his co-star in a break between takes.

The 47-year-old actor was decked out in his Captain Sparrow costume complete with dreadlocked wig and bandana, while Cruz, as Angelica, wore a low cut top, trousers and long boots.

And this was the first time British actor Ian McShane has been seen in pirate hat and big bushy beard to play the evil pirate Blackbeard.

The film follows Depp and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) embark on a quest to find the elusive Fountain of Youth, only to discover Angelica (Cruz) and her dad Blackbeard are after it too.

Angelica, a mysterious woman from Captain Jack's past, ends up forcing him aboard Blackbeard’s ship the Queen Anne's Revenge.

As he embarks on his unexpected adventure, Sparrow is left uncertain whether to fall for Angelica or if she's actually a ruthless con artist who is using him.

The fourth movie is directed by Rob Marshall, the man behind the Oscar-winning film adaptation of Chicago, which saw Catherine Zeta Jones lift the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

The 2006 film Dead Man's Chest meanwhile is the third highest-grossing movie of all time, taking an enormous £689,166,347.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is due to open in cinemas on May 20, 2011.
