Heartbroken Carey Mulligan casts an unkempt and lonely figure on the red carpet

She's been dumped and she's homeless - and it seems the single life in a down-market hotel is certainly taking its toll on Carey Mulligan.

The star was looking pale and wan on the red carpet in Los Angles last night at the Annual Hollywood Awards Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Wearing a maroon draped Giles silk dress and Roger Vivier peep toe heels while sporting minimal make-up and unkempt hair, she struggled to raise a smile for the cameras.

The 25-year-old - who can pocket up to £3.5million a movie - is currently staying at a £69-a-night Best Western after splitting from Transformers star Shia La Beouf.

The hotel is on a busy main road in a noisy part of town, which might explain her tired appearance.

However, she managed to joke with People.com, telling them: 'I don't know why people are so down on the Best Western. They have the best sweet potato fries I've ever had.'

She moved out of the £1.8million New York apartment she had shared with the LaBeouf since they got together in August 2009 after meeting on the set of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Mulligan, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in An Education, is staying in LA to work on her new movie Drive, a £20million heist drama also starring Mad Men star Christina Hendricks, until she moves back to Britain.

A friend said that Mulligan had flown to the Transformers 3 set in Chicago to try and save her relationship, but failed.

They explained: 'Things went from bad to worse. They broke up because Shia said they were both too busy with their careers. When Drive finishes filming she plans to return to the UK and split her time between her parents’ house in Buckinghamshire, and her brother Owain’s place in London.’

Rumours have abounded linking him to his new co-star in Transformers 3, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, despite the fact the model-turned-actress has been dating Jason Statham for months.

Meanwhile, winners at the Annual Hollywood Awards Gala included Sean Penn, who scooped the Humanitarian Award for his work with earthquake victims in Haiti.

Other triumphing including Danny Boyle and Christian Colson who won the Producer Award, Annette Bening the Actress Award, Robert Duvall the Actor Award and Zach Galifianakis the Comedy Actor Award.

Justin Timberlake and his co-stars of The Social Network meanwhile landed the Ensemble Acting gong.

Carey was there to present her Never Let Me Go co-star Andrew Garfield - who also stars in The Social Network - with the Breakthrough Actor award.
