Revealed: The last pictures of John Lennon before he was killed have emerged

These pictures are the last ever taken of John Lennon before he was murdered.

Some of them have never seen before, showing the Beatle during his last ever interview on December 6, 1980 - two days before he was shot dead by a crazed fan.

He is seen alongside wife Yoko Ono and various others including Radio One disc jockey Andy Peebles who was interviewing him at the time at the Hit Factory studio.

The photos were among thousands collected by a British music historian who is now selling the negatives with the copyright at auction.

The pictures show Lennon relaxed and happy wearing a round-neck blue jumper and distinctive glasses with blue tinted lenses.

Yoko has her black hair pulled back and is wearing a fur-style coat. The pair are pictured sitting at a table with a microphone attached.

On the table stands a can of Pepsi and two packets of cigarettes that look French, one of which Lennon is smoking.

Oddly the photographs include one with former Radio One DJ and convicted sex offender Jonathan King in it.

He is posing in the studio with staff from Warner Brothers, but not in the same frame as Lennon.

Mark Hayward, the music historian who is selling the photos along with many others, said he began collecting negatives in the 1980s.

He said: 'I found an auction that was selling the negatives along with the copyright and I started buying them. Not just ones of Beatles but of many bands and musicians.

'It was something that I started doing in about 1986 and I just carried on and I amassed 11,000 different images.

'I was paying about 200 pounds a time to use a photograph in a book, but when I saw they were available for sale along with copyright I decided it would be better to own them.

'It was during this time that I bought the ones of John Lennon. They are the last ones of him ever taken.

'He had been doing an interview for Radio One and obviously when staff knew John Lennon was coming they were keen to be photographed with him.

'Even Jonathan King managed to get in some of the pictures.'

Lennon's three hour interview with Peebles has become known as The Last Lennon Tapes.

Ironically, the DJ's last question to him was about his personal security to which Lennon replied that he felt safe and comfortable on the streets of New York.

Glenn Norcliffe, from Cameo auctions - the company selling the pictures - said: 'To any Beatles fan or Lennon fan these pictures are hugely important. They're the last of him ever taken.'

Earlier this year Cameo sold a photo album of a Beatles superfan who had visited band members when she was a teenager.

Lennon, who would have been 70 on October 9, was murdered by Mark Chapman outside his apartment building.

Chapman has spent 30 years in prison and was this year refused parole.

The sale of the Lennon photographs takes place on November 3 and the 10 pictures are estimated to fetch up to 1,200 pounds.
