Simon Cowell Teases About Paula Abdul 'X Factor' Rumors; Thought America Would Hate Him!

'You'll have to wait and see,' departing 'American Idol' judge tells Ryan Seacrest.

With Simon Cowell's last season of "American Idol" set to premiere Tuesday night (January 12), rumors are already spreading about the future of the show, as well as who will be joining Cowell on his U.S. version of "The X Factor" in 2011. But when Cowell called in to Ryan Seacrest's radio show on Tuesday morning, just a day after he announced he's leaving "Idol," he left very few questions answered.

For one, Cowell would neither confirm nor deny murmurs that former "Idol" judge Paula Abdul would be onboard for "X Factor." "You'll have to wait and see," he said. "It's interesting. Ever since we made the announcement, everyone's been on the phone."

Earlier in the broadcast, Seacrest wouldn't say whether he would join "X Factor" if asked to host, but Cowell said a host had already been tapped to join. "Does the 'X Factor' have a host? Yes, it does have a host," he revealed. "What is its name? You'll have to wait and see."

The judge also addressed the timing of his "Idol" departure, following the show's ninth season. "I think you've got to know when it's time to go," he explained. "I've always wanted to bring this other show over here, and at one point I was going to do both shows, but you know about overexposure, Ryan. You can't be on TV too much. That was really the decision. And then I thought people would be sick and tired of me, so it was all agreed in the last few days."

Cowell also joked about the rumors that Seacrest may serve as both host and judge on future seasons of "Idol." "You're going to replace me," he said. "Well, you just literally jump from your stage onto the chair, and that way you got an extra job. I'm thinking of you, even in my darkest moments."

Simon Cowell Thought America Would Hate Him!

SIMON Cowell was terrified he would be hated if he worked in America.

The music mogul was concerned viewers would react badly to his ‘Mr. Nasty’ persona if he agreed to be on the judging panel of American Idol after appearing on the UK version Pop Idol, but was eventually persuaded.

Nigel Lythgoe — who worked on the show with creator Simon Fuller — said, “We took it to Fox and Rupert Murdoch told his team, ‘You want Simon Cowell, he’s tough. I want it to stay tough.’

“At first Simon didn’t want to come to America. We twisted his arm but he was worried they wouldn’t like him. Amazing if you’re going to be nasty that you still want people to like you.”

American Idol went on to be one of the biggest successes on US TV but Nigel says they were careful not to let viewers get bored with the star-search talent show.

“We made sure we only did one season a year — I think that in the UK, once something is successful it’s wrung out like a sponge and gets overdone,” he said.
