British superhero movie Kick-Ass, which stars Nicolas Cage, has debuted at the top of the North American box office, figures show.
Initial estimates suggested that 3D animation adventure How to Train Your Dragon had claimed the top spot.
In a closely fought battle, Kick-Ass took $19.8m (£12.8m), while the family adventure took $19.6m (£12.7m).
Date Night followed in third place, with Death At A Funeral at four and Clash Of The Titans at number five.
Slapstick comedy Date Night dropped from last week's number two spot, taking $16.7m (£10.8m).
In the film, Tina Fey and Steve Carell play a married couple who land in a series of explosive situations after a rare romantic evening without their children.
New release Death At A Funeral, featuring Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Tracy Morgan, headed straight to fourth place, after bringing in £16.2m (£10.5m).
Critically-panned blockbuster Clash of the Titans fell from the top spot last week to fifth place, after it took $15.4m (£10m) in ticket sales.
In sixth place was The Last Song, starring Miley Cyrus - who has been forced to cancel her trip to the UK to publicise the film because of the volcanic cloud.
The movie, which also stars her boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, took $5.9m (£3.8m) in its third week of release.
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? took $4m (£2.5m), making it number seven in this week's chart.
In its seventh week, Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland fell one place to number eight, after taking $3.6m (£2.3m) and was followed by Hot Tub Time Machine in ninth place.
Rounding off this week's top ten was Jennifer Aniston's The Bounty Hunter, with takings of $3m (£1.9m).
