VanNess Wu: 'It's me and you against the world, baby'

SINGAPORE is closer to American-born Taiwanese idol Van Ness Wu's heart than you think.

The 32-year-old actor-singer's new love is Arissa Cheo, 27, who's believed to be a Singaporean.

News of their relationship broke early this month after the Hong Kong media caught the couple on a shopping trip in Hong Kong.

According to reports, Wu gently swept Miss Cheo's hair from her forehead while they were on an escalator.

Romance hit by bad press

They were also seen laughing and chatting throughout the outing.

Wu, who shot to mega fame in 2001 with the hit Taiwanese idol drama Meteor Garden and as part of the Taiwanese boy band F4, was also seen waiting patiently while Miss Cheo did her shopping.

In a statement relayed to the media by his manager, Wu freely admitted to the one-month-old relationship, according to Chinese news portal Sina.com.

He said: 'Since we have been photographed, it's best to admit it. She is indeed my new girlfriend. We have just started seeing each other.'

Wu added that Miss Cheo is not from the entertainment industry. So being hounded by the media made her uncomfortable.

When contacted by The New Paper, his manager politely declined an interview with Wu whom she said is in Taiwan.

She added: 'What needs to be said has already been said. There's no need for Van Ness to clarify anything.'

The New Paper tried to get in touch with Miss Cheo, who's believed to be in Singapore, through her friends, but she too, declined to be interviewed.

So just who is this lucky woman?

Arissa Cheo

Perhaps you may recall a particularly catty blogosphere fight between controversial local bloggers Wendy Cheng aka Xiaxue and Dawn Yang in 2008. It was then that Miss Cheo's name first popped up on the Internet.

In one of her lengthy blogs, Cheng suggested that Yang was a possible copycat of Miss Cheo - from their looks right down to the cars they drove.

Wu and Miss Cheo's friendship may have begun in 2006 when Miss Cheo starred in Wu's music video for his song My Kingdom.

Hong Kong actor Philip Ng, who is Wu's buddy, has described her as a 'very, very good female friend' of Wu and said that Miss Cheo had been 'part of their circle of friends for a long time'.

Various reports have stated that she is a Singaporean of Chinese-Indonesian descent, comes from a well-to-do family and was a former Methodist Girls' School student. On her Facebook page, she is listed as a University of Southern California graduate.

In her recent tweets, Miss Cheo wrote about a brief acting stint in Taiwan when she was 19 but quit after a year.

She was then 'in the middle of school applications' but accepted the offer because her 'best friends were there (in Taiwan)' and she thought 'it would be a good/fun experience'.

She tweeted: 'I never intended to stay for long. My parents never fully approved in the first place.'

During her year-long acting stint, she had supporting roles in Taiwanese idol dramas Toast Boy's Kiss II (2002) and Sweet Lemon (2003) under her stage alias Yao Zhining.

While reports have speculated that her father is a top media executive figure, Miss Cheo said via Twitter that her family 'runs a proper (and) legit business'.

Wu and Miss Cheo also apparently have many mutual celebrity friends, including Stanley Huang, Melody Yeung and Jaycee Chan, who has reportedly said that Miss Cheo is 'easygoing, gentle and chatty'.

But the lovebirds' blossoming romance has already been hit with bad press.

Hong Kong media said that Miss Cheo was recently photographed at a Taipei club with another man, whom she had reportedly introduced as her boyfriend.

This incident led to speculation that Miss Cheo left her alleged boyfriend to reunite with Wu, whom she reportedly broke up with in 2007.

Tweeting the record straight

But Wu clarified via Twitter that they were never in a prior relationship: 'We didn't start...till (a) few months ago.'

Miss Cheo also took to Twitter to 'set the record straight...even though 'I don't usually tweet stuff that are (sic) too personal and would prefer to remain silent'.

She clarified that the 'other guy' was her cousin and that they were holidaying together in Taipei.

Miss Cheo has also been criticised for her partying ways, evident in her own online photos.

But she remained indignant: 'There's nothing wrong with having fun and I love to take pictures, just as most of you do.'

Wu has been quick to defend his girl in the face of the media scrutiny.

He tweeted: '(It's) me and you against the world babie (sic)...We fight this war together...I'm lost without you.'

Wu used to date Taiwanese actress Vivian Hsu but they broke up in 2005 after a two-year relationship.

Mop.com, a Chinese entertainment website said that Wu has been single for the last two years.
