Android 2.2 Froyo gets official

Google has finally announced Android 2.2 Froyo (in the second day of its I/O conference).

Google is presenting the features of Android 2.2 as we speak, but some of them have already been unveiled.

Android 2.2 Froyo comes with Adobe Flash 10.1 support, Microsoft Exchange integration, tethering and portable hotspot capabilities, enhanced voice recognition, and a faster web browser – actually, Google goes as far as saying that Froyo has “the world’s fastest mobile browser.”

More novelties:
  • New Dalvik JIT compiler for a 2-5X performance improvement in CPU-bound code
  • Dedicated shortcuts on the Home screen for Phone, applications Launcher and Browser
  • Faster app switching and smoother performance on memory-constrained phones
  • Users can now switch between multiple Latin-based input languages
  • Apps can be installed on external memory cards
  • Apps now can be auto-updated
  • Android Application Error Reports
  • Camera supports zoom controls, portrait orientation, access to exposure data, and a thumbnail utility

Other Android-related details: Google now activates 100,000 Android phones per day, and there are 50,000 aps in Android Market.

An official Android 2.2 Froyo video promo can be watched below:

According to Google, Android 2.2 Froyo “will be made available to OEMs and the open source community in the coming weeks.” Until then, developers can already download the Android 2.2 SDK via the Android Developers website.

I think we might see Android 2.2 devices starting June, when Apple will also launch its new iPhone 4G / HD.
