Charmaine Sheh is ‘hot favorite’ to win TV Queen; TVB updates its ratings for "Can’t Buy Me Love"
With TVB’s Anniversary Awards ceremony taking place in December again this year, the competition for TV King and Queen has been a constant focus in recent weeks.
TVB’s series "Can’t Buy Me Love" has strong ratings as well as public accolades, propelling the series’ star Charmaine Sheh to the status of ‘hot favorite’ to win TV Queen at the awards ceremony end of this year. However she will have some heavy competition from last year’s TV Queen winner Sheren Tang, whose intense performance in the upcoming anniversary series "Rosy Business 2: No Regrets" already has people buzzing about a possible repeat win this year.
In efforts to help boost the chances for ‘biological daughter’ Charmaine to win TV Queen, TVB made a rare move yesterday – when announcing the ratings for the finale episode of "Can’t Buy Me Love"(which aired this past weekend), they counted the ratings from the internet audience as well (those who tuned in to watch via MyTV on TVB’s website). As a result, it caused the ratings for the finale episode -- which originally averaged only 42 points overall – to jump to 51 points, thereby ‘adding’ to Charmaine’s chances.
Yesterday, the cast and crew of "Can’t Buy Me Love" participated in a celebration event for the series; all of the main stars, including Charmaine Sheh, Moses Chan, Linda Chung, Raymond Wong, Kenneth Ma, etc. as well as producer Mui Siu Ching attended to show their support. Everyone was excited over the success of the series and opened a lot of champagne to celebrate. In his excitement, Moses even sprayed champagne all over the place!
In terms of the ‘fight’ for TV Queen this year and Charmaine being viewed as the ‘hot favorite’, she smiled and replied: “I’ll leave the awards up to fate.” (RB2 is currently CBML’s biggest competition?) “I’m also looking forward to watching "No Regrets", as I had watched "Rosy Business" originally.” (Do you feel that Sheren Tang is your strongest competitor for the award?) “Can’t really say that – the company has so many good productions, it’s a good thing. Hopefully every series can be like this and can be viewed as strong competition, that would be the happiest. Awards are not within our control.”
Both Moses and Charmaine indicated yesterday that they hope "Can’t Buy Me Love" will have a sequel – towards this, producer Mui Siu Ching stated: “I also hope that both "Can’t Buy Me Love" and "Beyond the Realm of Conscience" can have sequels, but which one to do first, that’s something to think about. It would be nice to do "Can’t Buy Me Love" sequel first, since it’s a comedy, however right now, I’m working on <<Forensic Heroes 3>>, so even if it’s possible to do a sequel, the earliest would have to be middle of next year.”
Asked which series she preferred to do a sequel first, Charmaine replied: “It’s hard to choose! Doing "Can’t Buy Me Love" first is less of an advantage for the character because the Princess would no longer be so bullying and it would not be funny anymore. If there’s a sequel for "Beyond the Realm of Conscience", I hope to be the villain, as there is more opportunity for development and expression there.”
