Barbie Hsu tired of malicious comments, shuts down micro-blog
Taiwan actress Barbie Hsu shut down her micro-blog on Wednesday night, after getting tired of reading the numerous malicious posts about her relationship with new beau Wang Xiao Fei, reported Chinese media.
Responding to posts from some netizens that claim she is a gold-digger and an opportunist for getting engaged to Wang, the son of a wealthy Chinese businesswoman, just 20 days after they first met, Hsu said she did not want to deal with it any longer and would stop micro-blogging.
"Every person I have known and fallen in love with was not informed by media reports or by estimates of their net worth. It would be great if love were so simple. I will now close my micro-blog," wrote Hsu in one of her final posts.
"Compared to all the people who have lost their lives due to the fearsome power of rumours, my retirement from micro-blogging is just a small protest against this ridiculous 'collective public trial'," Hsu told reporters, vowing not to update her micro-blog again.
"Next time, those who appear [on the micro-blog account] using my name are imposters."
The demise of the micro-blog was met with an outpouring of sympathy from most of its 3.6 million fans.
Wang was also upset and spoke up for Hsu in a series of strongly worded posts on his own micro-blog, within hours of the closure of her blog.
"For my love, today, I will have it out with you all (the posters of malicious comments on Hsu's blog) and will not rest!" he wrote.
"If you want to scold, scold here (to my face). Don't keep hiding! When dealing with your kind, I can only confront you directly."
Unlike their reaction to the closure of Hsu's blog, netizen reactions to Wang's comments were mixed.
Some praised Wang for trying to protect his lady while others expressed disgust at Wang's tirade, likening it to "a shrewish housewife shouting in the street".
