Disney Slashes Budget For “Pirates Of The Caribbean 4″

Sailing the friendly seas with Disney has gone coach. The Mouse has drastically cut the budget for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — the long-awaited fourth film in the studio’s blockbuster Pirates franchise.

In a recent chat with The Los Angeles Times, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Disney chairman Rich Ross wants the company to be “mean, lean, and cost effective.” In a effort to cut down on costs, Disney will be spending $100 million less on Pirates 4 than it did on 2007’s At Worlds End.

Although Bruckheimer insists that the audience will not notice the cuts in the final product, screenwriters Ted Eliott and Terry Rossio have been instructed to give Johnny Depp’s pirate alter ego Jack Sparrow more scenes on land rather than at sea, because of the high cost of filming water scenes. In addition, production will be moving filming locations from Los Angeles and the Caribbean to Hawaii and London and cutting back on shooting days and visual effects shots.

“The hard thing is you have to make painful decisions that cut into some very entertaining sequences. You have to figure out how to keep the movie very entertaining and give the audience more than what they expect and yet be cost-effective about it,” Jerry explains.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — featuring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, and Keith Richards — opens in theaters July 2011.
