HP debuts quad-core Envy 14 and 17; start at $999 and $1,399
Hewlett Packard on Wednesday announced the Envy 14 and 17, adding two more models to its existing lineup of 13- and 15-inch Envy premium laptops.
The new MacBook-like notebooks aren’t too different from their differently-sized siblings, and fill out the lineup nicely, particularly at the large end.
Both of the new Envy notebooks feature Intel processors and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5830 discrete graphics.
Outside, you’ll find a magnesium/aluminum alloy shell, backlit keyboard, slot-loading optical drive, HP TrueVision HD webcam, a mini DisplayPort Connector and several connectivity options.
The notebooks also include Beats Audio, which optimizes sound for listening through headphones or external speakers.
The Envy 14 sports a 14.5-inch diagonal HD Radiance display that HP says is some 59 percent brighter than a standard notebook. Resolution is 1600 by 900 pixels, brightness is 350 nits and color gamut clocks in at 82 percent.
It’s 5.25 lbs., and sports an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processor. Visuals are powered by switchable graphics comprised of integrated Intel GMA HD and discrete ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 (1GB DDR3).
It’s got three USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA shared port, HDMI v1.3c, Mini-Display Port, a 2-1 Digital Media Reader (SD, MMC), a Beats headphone jack, a second headphone + microphone combo jack and Gigabit Ethernet.
It manages up to six hours of battery life. It offers optional WWAN/3G.
Meanwhile, the Envy 17 pretty much crams everything it can into one package — it’s clearly the barnburner of the bunch. With this model you’ll find Intel Core i5 and i7 and ATI Mobility Radeon 5850 (1GB GDDR5) graphics.
You’ll also find display options that go up to 1920 by 1080 pixels (up to 300 nits; up to 72 percent color gamut) and two 2.5-inch storage slots (each HDD up to 1TB; each SSD up to 160GB).
Ports are the same as the Envy 14 with a few exceptions: the Envy 17 has two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.0, VGA and a 5-in-1 card reader. Optical drive options include Blu-ray, of course.
It weighs 7.51 lbs and comes with ATI Eyefinity Technology for multiple external display support and HP Triple Bass Reflex Subwoofer for, well, all that audio work you do.
The HP Envy 14 will be available in the U.S. on June 27 with a starting price of $999.99.
The HP Envy 17 will be available in the U.S. on May 19 with a starting price of $1,399.99.
HP targets tight IT budgets with nine new AMD-powered business notebooks; start $549
Hewlett Packard on Wednesday made it readily apparent that it’s targeting tightened IT budgets with the introduction of nine, count ‘em nine, new AMD-powered business notebooks that start at $549.
The laptops address both the small and medium business (SMBs) and corporate enterprise markets.
First, the ProBook B-series.
The 14-inch HP ProBook 6455b and 15.6-inch ProBook 6555b are available with your choice of AMD Phenom II, Turion II, Athlon II, or V-series processors, which HP says are overall 69 percent faster than the previous generation of AMD ProBooks.
They’re available with HD LED-backlit or anti-glare displays, spill-resistant keyboard with drains, dual-pointing devices and your choice of 6-cell or 9-cell battery.
They also come preloaded with Central Management for HP ProtectTools for remote management.
They’ll be available in June, starting at $779.
That contrasts with HP’s new 14-inch ProBook 6450b and 15.6-inch ProBook 6550b, which carry much of the same features but instead offer Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors (including vPro technology for remote management).
Further, these two notebooks offer a choice of UMA or discrete graphics, in the form of Intel HD or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v graphics.
They also feature a combo eSATA/USB 2.0 port to connect to external RAID array, HDD or optical drives.
They, too, will be available in June, but pricing information was not yet available.
Next up, the ProBook S-series.
Three new models were announced: the 13.3-inch HP ProBook 4325s, 14-inch ProBook 4425s and 15.6-inch ProBook 4525s.
In contrast with the B-series, the S-series features brushed-aluminum metal cases in “caviar” and “bordeaux.” (Read: dark gray and deep red, as seen at the top of this post.)
All three models sport HD LED-backlit displays and offer a choice of AMD Phenom II, Turion II Athlon II or V-series processors.
Depending on the model, discrete graphics are also available, in the form of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 530v, with 512 MB dedicated video memory. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 integrated graphics are also available.
The S-series features integrated multimedia controls, clickpad gestures and the ArcSoft Total Media Suite (audio/video editing).
They’ll be available this month, starting at $619.
One thing to note: all B-series and S-series notebooks feature HP Day Starter (to check Outlook calendar on boot), HP QuickLook (quick-boot access for email, calendar, contacts and tasks), HP QuickWeb (quick-boot websites) and HP Power Assistant for power management and reporting.
Finally, the barebones bargain bunch.
The 14-inch HP 425 and 15.6-inch HP 625 sport HD LED-backlit displays, 2 megapixel webcams with integrated microphone, spill-resistant keyboards, memory from 1GB to 4GB (up to 8GB), storage from 160GB to 500GB and, of course, AMD processors (Turion II, Athlon II, V-series).
They come wrapped in a gray microfiber pattern finish and are available in May starting at $549.
