It’s a well known fact that Google likes the alphabet and sweets for its Android versions’ codenames. Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, and the upcoming Gingerbread are proof enough.
Sure, there were a few misses (wasn’t Android 2.0 supposed to be Eclair? Also, what ever happened to Flan?), but generally the rule is clear. Each new version takes us to the next letter of the alphabet, while keeping the deserts theme.
So it was expected for the version of Android that’s to come after 3.0 Gingerbread to start with the letter H.
And the exact name seems to have been revealed: Honeycomb.
There’s absolutely no more information, but speculation has started that this may be just an incremental update, a 3.1 or 3.2 and not Android 4.0. Judging from Google’s recent release cycle, and their previous claims that they will be slowing it down, expect it to be finished near the end of Q2 2011.
When we’ll start seeing it in actual devices is anyone’s guess, since it will probably still be up to the manufacturers to release upgrades for their smartphones and tablets.
And with Gingerbread not even out, Honeycomb is very far off at this point. But hey, at least we got the first bit of info about it: the name. It will all get easier from here.
