Samsung Galaxy S may get Android 2.2 Froyo on September 23rd

Samsung’s flagship Android smartphone has sadly launched with Android 2.1 Eclair on board. As a consequence of that, ever since its release, what people have been most interested in is when it will receive an update to Android 2.2 Froyo, the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system.

And up until now we have heard quite a few things about this. In France, the update will happen in September. Samsung UK confirmed that the UK roll-out will start by the end of September. So, clearly, unless some unforeseen delay hits, September is the month when it begins.

Today a different source, this time from Finland, has confirmed this time frame yet again. Apparently, Samsung’s repairs department will be:

“definitely receiving new software for repairing froyo builds on the 22nd of September, with the build expected to be released on the 23rd”

Since Finland probably isn’t as special to Samsung as it is to Nokia, it’s safe to assume that it won’t be the only country where the update will start on September 23rd.

Of course, if you dare, there are leaked Froyo builds for the Galaxy S out there, and we even showed you how to flash them. But if you haven’t done that already, perhaps it’s best to wait for the officially sanctioned bits to hit your device. Which may happen in less than ten days.

This information obviously only relates to the i9000, the international version of the Galaxy S. There is still no word on when its versions tailor-made for the Big Four US carriers will begin to receive this highly anticipated update.
